First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro Hosts Second Annual Sorority Recruitment Dinner for A-State Freshmen Women

First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro (FUMCJ) opened its doors once again this week to welcome over 300 young women from Arkansas State University for the church’s second annual Sorority Recruitment Dinner. Hosted in Wesley Hall, the event was designed to offer encouragement, hospitality, and a sense of belonging to incoming freshmen in the midst of A-State’s formal sorority recruitment process.

With tables decorated in cheerful colors and volunteers lining up to greet each student, the evening set the tone for a warm, supportive start to what can often be a high-pressure week. Guests enjoyed a baked potato bar, chili, and cookies, and heard messages of encouragement. They also had the opportunity to connect with local sorority alumnae and church members—all there to cheer them on.

Rev. Dr. Michael Roberts, senior pastor at FUMCJ, shared a heartfelt blessing and welcome. “Our goal is simple,” he said. “We want these young women to know they are loved, they are supported, and they have a home here in Jonesboro.”

The event is quickly becoming a beloved tradition at First United Methodist. Many of the volunteers, including parents of A-State students and former sorority members, said they were grateful for the opportunity to support students during a time of transition.

Lay Leader and A-State professor Holly Hall offered words of encouragement, recalling her own experience going through what was then known as “rush.” She reminded the women to embrace the week ahead. “Be yourself and you’ll find the right sorority home,” Hall urged. “Soak in every moment—this is an exciting, special and sometimes exhausting week!”

Rev. Dennis Ellzey, Director of the A-State Wesley Foundation and Campus Minister, also addressed the group, extending an open invitation to participate in the Wesley Foundation’s activities. Quoting the United Methodist Church’s motto, he emphasized, “We are a church of Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.”

The evening was coordinated by church member Mary Hyneman, who, alongside dozens of volunteers from the congregation, ensured the dinner ran smoothly. Smiles, conversation, and laughter filled the room as students enjoyed both the food and the fellowship.

This second annual event reflects First United Methodist Church’s ongoing commitment to serving the A-State community—not just by meeting needs, but by creating meaningful connections that last well beyond recruitment week.
