After attending a One More Question training, I decided a good Lenten practice for me would be to meet 40 people in local businesses in my mission field as pastor at Prairie Grove UMC.
At first, it seemed daunting. I would hesitate, procrastinate, and just plain delegate to another day or time. But once I pushed through – blessings abounded! Smiles broke out on faces that were not smiling. People shook my hand. I have even had several hugs.
I begin by telling them about my Lenten practice, giving my name and where I work. I ask them their names. Then I ask if they have a moment to share with me something that brings them joy today or that they are struggling with or both. If they hesitate and it is a place I can, I tell them I will look around while they think about it if that helps. Then they share. Sometimes they will ask me in return.
Kai was yesterday’s person. I frequent her family-owned coffee shop and know her sister by name, but not her. So, I decided she would be my person. Kai is a nickname for a beautiful, longer name, but she likes Kai. She had asked me if I had tried the mocha espresso roll that is only served on Wednesdays. I replied I had not, she said, “You should.” Kai is quiet and kind and never really puts herself “out there.” So I did. NO REGRETS! I completed my Community Office Hour there, enjoying my pastry and coffee, and then asked her if she had an answer to my questions.
Her joy is that she received enough money for her hedgehog Opal Mae to have the surgery she needed. Her face lit up. Her struggle was that she had to have it done in the first place. A conversation and opportunity for prayer opened. Maybe you could also say a prayer for Opal Mae’s recovery? And for Kai and the good work she is doing.
This is my favorite Lenten practice ever!
