Obituary – William “Jimmy” James Williams

William James Williams died Monday, August 26, one day short of his 78th birthday, from complications after surgery and a culmination of several health issues in recent years.

“Jim” or “Jimmy” to those who knew him best, was born in Florence, Alabama on August 27, 1946, to William Ervin and Cora Lee Williams. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother, Gary Dwight Williams of Florence, Alabama, and a granddaughter, Hazel Kate Williams. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Williams Byrd, and husband, Dennis, and their children, Branden and Addison, of Benton; his son, the Rev. Heath Williams and wife, the Rev. Jeanne, and their children, Natalie, Marcus, and Eli, of Little Rock; and his sister, Donna Williams Thompson (Phillip) of Florence, Alabama.

He graduated from Florence State University (now the University of North Alabama) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Upon graduation, he worked for Sears in Florence, later transferred to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, then on to Little Rock where he retired in management. He also had a distinguished career with Leisure Arts. He was an avid painter with art hanging in many family members’ and friends’ homes.

He was raised an Alabama Crimson Tide fan, and cheered them on his entire life, even through the Mike DuBose years. He was also a lifelong United Methodist and a Highland Valley United Methodist Church member in Little Rock, where he raised his children. While living in Florence, he attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. After moving back to Arkansas to be near his children, he was a regular attendee of First United Methodist Church in Benton.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Benton with service to follow immediately with the Rev. Keith Dodson officiating. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the youth program at First United Methodist Church in Benton, Primrose United Methodist Church in Little Rock, or Levy United Methodist Church in North Little Rock.

Arrangements entrusted to Smith Benton Funeral Home.
