Magallanes, Smith and Patton Assume New Roles at Perkins

DALLAS (SMU) — On June 1, Dr. Hugo Magallanes assumed the role of the Leighton K. Farrell Dean, ad interim for Perkins School of Theology, succeeding the appointment of Bishop Michael McKee in the interim role. In a March announcement, Provost Elizabeth Loboa expressed gratitude to Bishop McKee and Dr. Magallanes for their leadership to Perkins and to SMU during this transitional period.

Dr. Magallanes most recently served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs while also holding the position of Associate Professor of Christianity and Cultures. In his new role as Dean ad interim, he will continue to serve as Director for both CASA (Centro de Acompañamiento Solidaridad y Adiestramiento) (the Centro de Acompañamiento, Solidaridad y Adiestramiento) and the United Methodist Regional Course of Study School for Local Pastors.

During Dr. Magallanes’ interim tenure, Dr. Abraham Smith, Professor of New Testament, will serve as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, ad interim at Perkins. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs has primary responsibility for managing the curricular activities of the school in our academic programs with specific roles in managing course offerings, faculty development and support, academic advising and academic procedures.

Also effective June 1, Bart Patton assumed the role of Assistant Dean of External Programs and Church Relations. In this capacity, he will oversee relationship-building initiatives with denominations, conferences, networks, ministries, agencies and churches related to Perkins’ partnership and program development. He will also be responsible for the creation and ongoing maintenance of strong institutional relationships with church leaders.

Prior to this promotion, Patton served as Director of the Office of External Programs and Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry Education at Perkins.
