Experience Camp Tanako: A Summer to Remember

As summer approaches, many parents and pastors seek enriching experiences for their children and youth. Camp Tanako, in beautiful Hot Springs, Arkansas, offers a unique opportunity for spiritual growth, community building, and unforgettable memories. With a history of 76 years in ministry, Camp Tanako is more than just a summer camp—it’s a place set apart, designed to nurture every camper’s mind, body, and spirit.

Why Choose Camp Tanako?

Kayla Hardage, Executive Director of Camp Tanako, emphasizes the camp’s mission: “We believe in slowing down from the everyday hustle and being present in our space. There have been many call stories and spirit-filled moments at camp, and we are so excited to continue being that place for many kids!” Camp Tanako’s tagline, “a place set apart,” perfectly encapsulates the experience, ensuring that every child leaves with a deeper connection to themselves, others, and God.

A Thoughtfully Crafted Experience

Camp Tanako’s program caters to all walks of life. “Our schedule is crafted to allow all walks of life to find their peace in our space,” Hardage explains. The camp features a balanced mix of small group devotions, large worship sessions, and engaging activities that range from silly songs referencing Bible stories to Wesleyan Grace before meals. This thoughtful blend ensures that every camper feels loved, seen, and appreciated.

Safety and Inclusivity at the Forefront

Parents can rest assured that safety is a top priority. As Hardage highlights, “All of our staff go through two weeks of training before we begin each summer. Each staff member is CPR/First Aid certified, and some staff undergo specialty training, such as lifeguards and high rope course instructors.” The camp’s partnership with local law enforcement and fire departments ensures preparedness.

Moreover, inclusivity is a core value at Camp Tanako. “You do not have to be Methodist or Christian to come to camp; just come. All are welcome to come and experience the magic camp!” says Hardage. This open invitation fosters a diverse and welcoming community, celebrating each camper’s unique qualities and teaching the importance of stewardship and care for creation.

Building Lifelong Memories and Friendships

Camp Tanako is not just a camp; it’s a legacy. Diane Wright, Camp Chaplain, shares a personal connection: “My children are third-generation campers at Tanako. Thanks to my mom and uncle going to camp, I began going to camp, and now my children attend.” This multi-generational tradition underscores the lasting impact of the Camp Tanako experience.

Wright eloquently captures the essence of camp life: “I tell people all the time I met Jesus at Tanako. Our Bible studies happen in small groups, but it’s through games and group activities that conversations and trust occur. God is felt in powerful worship services, through songs, or when worshipping in our outdoor chapel, overlooking Lake Catherine.”

A Unique Growth Environment

Camp Tanako offers unique growth opportunities. “Camp forces you into situations you won’t encounter at school or home. You meet people from different backgrounds and have to learn how to get along with others,” says Wright. These experiences build confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment that campers carry back into their everyday lives.

Encouragement for Parents and Pastors

For parents seeking a meaningful and transformative summer experience for their children, Camp Tanako stands out as an exceptional choice. The camp’s blend of fun, faith, and fellowship creates an environment where children can grow spiritually and socially.

Pastors, too, play a crucial role in encouraging their congregation’s youth to attend. By promoting Camp Tanako, pastors can help their young members find a supportive and enriching community that complements their faith journey at home.
