First United Methodist Church McKinney
Position Summary
The Director of Music Ministries will create and implement music ministries for First United Methodist Church McKinney, a 5,000-member congregation in downtown McKinney, Texas. They will direct the choir and musicians in Sanctuary worship and engage the congregation through music.
The Director of Music Ministries will have deep knowledge of a wide variety of worship music, an understanding of the traditions and theology of the United Methodist Church, and a belief that all people are loved and welcome in our church.
Responsibilities of the Director of Music Ministries
- Coordinate and direct music at four traditional Sanctuary worship services every Sunday, including any vocal and/or instrumental performances. Work with the Pastoral staff in planning Sanctuary worship.
- Direct the Chancel Choir.
- Oversee, collaborate with, and assist the music ministers on staff who direct the contemporary worship praise band, children’s and youth choirs, handbells, and flute choir.
- Recruit and encourage musicians, both vocal and instrumental, within the congregation and promote the music program.
- Maintain regular choir rehearsal and communicate regularly with choir members via email.
- Direct music performance scholarship funds to attract musical talent to the Chancel Choir from beyond the congregation.
- Select and purchase choir music within budget.
- Prepare and transcribe instrumentation and vocal arrangements.
- Plan special music for weekly worship services and special occasions and holidays.
- Collaborate with the directors of youth choir, children’s choir, handbells, and flutes and schedule their participation in Sanctuary worship.
- Provide or arrange musical accompaniment for services, weddings, and funerals.
- Catalog and organize all music resources.
- Oversee the care and upkeep of all instruments.
- Provide administrative staff with song lyrics and other bulletin information.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Attend continuing education events as approved to enhance and improve job skills.
- Assist the Pastors with other ministry projects as needed.
- Offer suggestions and observations which would improve First United Methodist McKinney’s music ministry.
- Assume such other duties as may be assigned by the pastors.
Qualifications
- A degree in music education, music performance, or equivalent experience.
- Enthusiastic with good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to actively engage the congregation during worship through music.
- Ability to give and receive constructive criticism.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships and support staff decisions.
- A commitment to spiritual growth which will enhance the basic theological outlook of the United Methodist Church.
Pay Rate
Negotiable, consistent with candidate’s education, experience, and skill level.
