General Summary:
First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs is seeking applications for the position of Minister of Music for traditional worship.  This position involves leading and overseeing the music ministries in traditional worship settings, recruiting and training volunteers to be involved in music ministry, and working with the senior minister and staff in fulfilling the vision and mission of the church.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead, oversee, and expand a music ministry that helps the congregation accomplish its mission. This includes the provision of vocal, orchestral, and other instrumental music that coordinates with and enhances the traditional worship services of the church.
  • Recruit, train, and encourage people to be involved in the music ministry of the church.
  • Oversee the traditional music ministry of the church. Primary responsibilities include adult and youth vocal choirs, adult, youth, and children’s handbell choirs, ukulele orchestra, special choir program at Christmas and Easter, and various ensembles or soloists.
  • Consult and coordinate with the contemporary praise team leader to enhance the total music ministry of the church.
  • Plan and supervise regular practice sessions for the traditional music ministries to ensure the quality of musical presentations.
  • Lead musical portions of worship at the 9:00 and 11:00 traditional services.
  • Select and order new music and supplies for the choir and handbell programs, and supervise the selection of music for other music programs.
  • Supervise the paid and voluntary staff organists, and maintain a current list of organists, instrumentalist, and soloists available for special worship services (e.g., funerals and weddings).
  • Promote and plan special choir and handbell worship opportunities with other churches or the annual conference.
  • Be present for all traditional worship services, excluding illness and vacation, to lead and encourage congregational singing.
  • Be present and help lead music at funerals/memorial services when needed.
  • Coordinate plans with the senior minister, other music staff, and the worship planning team for worship services and special musical programs such as: Longest Night, Lessons and Carols, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Grand Central Christmas Concert when offered.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the senior minister.
  • Attend weekly church staff meetings to coordinate ministry plans.
  • Keep regular office hours and contact information on how to be reached when not in the office.
  • Publicize opportunities and events through newsletter articles, bulletin announcements, church Facebook page, and digital sign.
  • Prepare a budget for the Music Ministries annually to submit to the Finance Committee.
  • Attend Board of Stewards meetings and be prepared to report as requested.
  • Purchasing of water and other supplies in person.
  • Maintenance of sound system in Sanctuary.
  • Receive and file new music and maintain choir and handbell music libraries.
  • Oversee upkeep of all pianos, organ, and carillon.
  • Set up and take down handbells for use in worship.
  • Take handbell group to annual state festival.
  • Organize and lead summer children’s music/MAD camp.
  • Maintain and manage music streaming license.
  • Coordinate music and musicians for outside events at the church such as Getting Ahead graduation and Lakeside Baccalaureate.

Educational Requirements:
This is a full-time position with a degree in music and experience in choral directing and or instrumental music preferred.
