Midway Locust Grove UMC in Columbia, MO, is seeking a full-time Director of Family Ministries. Position: Director of Family Ministries (Full-Time)

Reports to Lead Pastor

Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Director of Family Ministries is to disciple children and students for spiritual growth while equipping them to serve Christ.

Midway Kids:

  • Oversee the Children’s Ministry Team.
  • Oversee Midway Kids on Sunday mornings.
  • Enlist, train, resource, and encourage adult volunteers to lead Midway Kids on Sunday mornings.
  • Oversee Sunday morning Midway Kids check in.
  • Encourage parents to become/remain active in the spiritual formation of their children’s lives by consistently sending/posting Parent Que materials.
  • Help develop and effectively maintain Children’s Ministry annual budget, wisely utilizing church resources to maximize ministry opportunities.
  • Consistently communicate with Lead Pastor regarding ministry accomplishments and concerns.
  • Actively pray, dream, and vision over the future of Midway Kids.
  • Oversee planning and execution of VBS.
  • Plan and oversee Midway Kids summer day trips, to include registration and chaperones.
  • Plan and oversee Family Fun Nights and Family Give Back Days.

Student Ministry:

  • Lead/teach Sunday evening student programming.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians weekly to keep them informed of all happenings in our Student Ministry.
  • Recruit students from MLGUMC and the community to participate in student ministry.
  • Lead the Confirmation Class for middle school and high school students.
  • Develop and implement retreats, local give-back days, mission experiences, activities, and other events to help students grow in their relationship with Christ.
  • Help develop and maintain Student Ministry budget.
  • Develop student leaders who minister to their peers.
  • Recruit, train, direct, and provide structure and support for volunteer counselors.
  • Create and maintain an annual calendar for Student Ministry activities and events.
  • Consistently communicate with Lead Pastor regarding ministry accomplishments and concerns.
  • Work with the Lead Pastor to integrate students into the life of the church.
  • Be available to minister and counsel students and their parents.
  • Foster the continued spiritual growth of college/career-aged members of MLGUMC.

Skills and Attributes:

The Director of Family Ministries must:

  • Possess personal qualities appealing to children and students, including being passionate, energetic, enthusiastic, and fun.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills in communicating with and relating to children and students. The Director of Family Ministries must be one in whom our children and students can have complete trust.
  • Possess the ability to guide and challenge children and students as they explore and grow in their Christian faith through shared experiences, weekly programming, retreats, and missions.
  • Possess the maturity and wisdom to provide structure, high expectations, and guidance for the spiritual maturation process of children and students.
  • In addition to knowledgeable teaching, the Director of Family Ministries must be a mentor and is expected to bear witness to Christ not only in teaching but in lifestyle as well.
  • Possess the visionary leadership and organizational skills to lead the recruiting and training of volunteer counselors.
  • Possess counseling and pastoral care skills to enable the Director of Family Ministries to effectively guide children, students, and their families, through the challenges associated with growing up.
  • Possess the administrative skills necessary to create and maintain a budget, plan weekly programs, organize fund-raisers, etc.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong technical skills (including multiple Social Media Platforms, ProPresenter, Word, Excel, and database management).
  • Possess the desire to grow professionally, be team smart, and a servant leader.


MLGUMC is seeking a person with:

  • A sincere call to vocational ministry.
  • Experience in successful children and/or student ministry.
  • The ability and willingness to affirm and teach Wesleyan theology, especially as it concerns God’s grace, the understanding and living out faith in Jesus Christ, and the primacy of scripture as interpreted through the Holy Spirit and guided by reason, tradition (church teaching), and experience.
  • Applicants will be asked to submit a written version of their call to ministry as well as a statement of their faith.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,000.00 – $40,000.00 per year


  • 8 hour shift
  • Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Columbia, MO 65202: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)
