I had watched the forecast for several days and saw it coming. Then it was confirmed. A frost warning was issued for the early morning hours today with temperatures close to – but just above – freezing. Experience has taught us, however, that we are almost always several degrees cooler. This became important because it meant the flowers we had put out a couple of weeks ago were in jeopardy of being damaged. So Karen got out our frost bags and sheets, and covered up everything. We could have done nothing, and rationalized the resulting damage by saying, “it was God’s will.” But God expects us to take responsibility for things we can do. Sometimes it’s as simple as protecting tender flowers. More often, and far more importantly, it’s taking responsibility to live out our discipleship by sharing Jesus with others, feeding the hungry, opposing the sin of racism and living with a heart of peace in a polarized world.
