As the new year began, I settled on a list of things I want to work on in my life. Mind you, they are not ‘resolutions’ because that has always led to failure and guilt. Instead they are things that are important enough that I want to see significant change for the long run. The choice of words may seem unnecessary, but it makes a huge difference to me about how I approach things. Since I’m in it for the long haul, it’s okay if I take a step backward or sideways instead of a step forward because it’s not about being perfect every moment, but rather keeping at it every day because it’s a priority. This is true for things like losing weight, dealing with issues that have haunted me my entire life or learning a new skill. It’s all the more true for the most important thing in my life: growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ. And that’s why I ask myself a simple question several times every day. If I want to grow as a Jesus follower, how can I act like it today?
