“He’s making a list. He’s checking it twice. He’s going to find out who’s naughty and nice.” These familiar words from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” still resonate from my childhood. And while I have fond memories of the song, I also realize how similar this image of Santa Claus is to the image many people have of God. And that’s too bad. The message of Christmas is not that God comes primarily to discover how you are doing and then judge accordingly. The message of Christmas is that in the very midst of the reality of our muck, mess-ups and mis-steps, God shows up to save us from ourselves.
