One of the songs we sang when I was growing up was, “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town”. The opening lyrics were, “You better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout. I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town. He’s making a list. He’s checking it twice. He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice. Santa Claus is coming to town.” Even as a child the message was clear: I had better be on my best behavior if I wanted Santa to give me presents. In this season of Advent, we’re waiting for Jesus to come to town. But the songs we sing are very different than I sang as a child. They help us yearn for Jesus, whose gift of unconditional love saves, heals and transforms us.
