It’s happened again – and again – in the last 24 hours. Mass murder. This time in El Paso and Dayton.

We find ourselves reacting with the same outrage, grief, numbness, shock and questions. We find ourselves turning to You seeking the same answers, comfort for the victims and their families, and hope for our nation. We find ourselves offering the same prayers we have repeated far too often in recent years.

So maybe, Lord, what we need from You far more than these things right now is Your holy conviction. Conviction that overcomes our denial so we can see what is really happening. Conviction that neutralizes all the ideological talking points we keep mindlessly repeating regardless of the realities we face. Conviction that destroys our willingness to use these tragedies to bolster our own political positions. And conviction that shakes our own inaction in the face of these tragedies that threaten our nation’s soul.

Convict us, Lord, convict us. Convict us until we repent. Convict us until we embrace the fact that this is a moral issue for disciples of Jesus. Convict us until we act.

We pray this in the strong name of Jesus, who died that Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
