Today is Veterans’ Day – a time to celebrate, remember and say “Thank you!” to all the men and women who have served on our behalf. One of the things that makes this a special day is that we honor ordinary people who did extraordinary things as they stepped forward to protect us in a very dangerous world. Some made the ultimate sacrifice, others suffered physically for years and still others spent a lifetime dealing with emotional and spiritual trauma. So why did they do this? While there are many reasons, there’s one that doesn’t get mentioned very often: love so powerful it wades into the muck of life to bring safety, security and peace. What they did was often messy, ugly and certainly not part of God’s ultimate vision for the world. But when love is unleashed in real life, hope always emerges.
