You won’t talk about it. In fact, you don’t even want to think about it because it’s just too painful to consider. So whenever it starts to surface, you stuff it back down and pretend it’s not there. But it is. And you can’t hide from it regardless of what you do. It’s the fact that sometimes you’re convinced God doesn’t love you. That you’re dirty, broken, a failure, unlovable – and that’s just the way things are. Well that’s not just the way things are. Because God does love you. Unconditionally, infinitely, eternally, unabashedly, in spite of anything you do, regardless of what others say about you – and especially when you no longer believe it’s possible. The reason is simple. God is passionately in love with you. And God will do everything possible to help you experience that this singular reality is far more powerful than anything else in your life.
There is a pretty good chance you tune out most people as soon as they start telling you what they think you ought to do. But those same people will almost always get your full attention if they ask you a question – especially if that question is probing, deep and personal. That’s because there is incredible power in questions, especially when God asks the right question at the right time in the right way – which God seems to do with great regularity. God’s questions have a way of penetrating deeply into your soul, inviting you to deal with the most important issues in life and not letting go until the two of you come up with an answer. So listen carefully. Listen with your soul. And listen with great anticipation for all of God’s questions that will always change your life.
Some days you may feel like a robot that has absolutely no say about what happens in your life. Other days you may feel like the captain of your soul completely in control of everything. The reality, however, is that you are neither robot nor captain. You are first, foremost and always a child of God. This is your true identity. So claim it, embrace it and unleash it even when that seems like an incredible challenge. Of course, it takes a great deal of courage to say, “I am a child of God and not some robot who has no options.” Likewise, it takes a great deal of humility to say, “I am a child of God and not the one who gets to do exactly what I want to do.” But in the end, it will be worth it for one simple reason – you will discover who you really are.
Your gracious love shines from this moment into all of eternity.
Let it shine Your love in all the dark places of pain, hurt, failure and sin to bring us healing, fresh starts and hope in all the ways we need most. Let it illuminate Your will with absolute clarity to enable us to live as You have created us. Let it radiate Your power in our lives to embolden us to share your love, forgiveness, new life and hope with others.
Yes, let Your love shine brightly, Lord. On us. In us. And through us.
And lasting forever more.
Amen and amen.
