Ash Wednesday is a powerful reminder of the reality of human existence: “from dust you have come and to dust you shall return”. It is the start of a solemn time of introspection, self-assessment and honest confession. It is the beginning of a period of deep spiritual preparation for the joyful celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. And it’s the day someone may ask you, “What are you giving up for Lent?” So maybe you’ll attend a service where ashes are placed on your forehead in the sign of a cross. Maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll engage in spiritual disciplines for the next 40 days. Maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll ‘give up’ something for Lent. Maybe you won’t. But when all is said and done, what really matters about this day is that you make a deep commitment to get serious about your relationship with Jesus like you’ve never gotten serious before.
