A tale of two days. Yesterday, a living hell erupted in Santa Fe, Texas, as 10 people died in yet another school shooting. Today, a fairytale wedding unfolded as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married. Royal weddings don’t happen very often and, when they do, are great celebrations catching up the entire world. Unbelievably, the 22 school shootings this year alone occur literally more than once a week. My deepest prayer – arising out of deep grief, righteous indignation and the hope we find in Jesus Christ – is that we finally will get over making these tragedies about politics, the ideological posturing of both the left and right, and all the calls that we won’t let this happen again. My deepest prayer – arising out of deep grief, righteous indignation and the hope we find in Jesus Christ – is that we finally will care deeply enough for our children that political, faith, civic, business, advocacy and school leaders will sit down and work together to protect our children. My deepest prayer – arising out of deep grief, righteous indignation and the hope we find in Jesus Christ – is that God will move hearts and minds in a powerful new way so that there will be many, many, many weddings that bring tears of joy and no school shootings that unleash tears of grief, sorrow and hopelessness. Come, Holy Spirit, come.
