Director of Youth Ministry – St. Luke’s UMC, Indianapolis, Indiana


St. Luke’s UMC is one of the largest United Methodist churches in the U.S. with a membership of over 6,000. The Director of Youth Ministry supervises the entire youth ministry programming and is directly responsible for the High School Ministry. Currently, the youth ministry consists of 5-8 Grade Middle School (average attendance is 100 students on Sunday Mornings) and 9-12 Grade High School (average attendance is 40 students on Sunday Mornings). The rosters of youth connected directly to St. Luke’s lists about 60 students per grade. Each year the 7th grade Confirmation class runs between 50-65 youth.

This position reports to the Director of Program Ministries and supervises youth ministry staff and is an exempt, full-time, salaried position with benefits.RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Youth Ministry is enthusiastic and responsible for growing the number of High School students involved in the ministry. Within two years the ministry should reflect the following growth: 

  • Sunday morning attendance will grow from an average of 40 High School students to
  • New ministry opportunities will be implemented that engage 60 High School youth weekly beyond Sunday morning such as the development of small groups throughout the
  • High School activities will involve 155 individual students in some way each
  • Retreats will grow from 100 to 145 individual students
  • Annual High School Regional or International Mission Trips will grow from 35 to 75 students

Additional Responsibilities include: 

  • Responsible for all youth ministry programming and leading and supervision of youth ministry staff (One full-time Director for Middle School and part-time Administrative Assistant) and collaborating with other ministry areas of St. Luke’s.
  • Vision, plan, implement and direct all high school ministries utilizing volunteer leadership youth teams and volunteer adult
  • Manage and oversee the Youth Ministry
  • Provide regular communication with youth, parents, and adult
  • Teach Christian beliefs and practices in ways that are relevant to high school
  • Intentionally bridge students from middle school to high school and from high school to college connection
  • Provide helpful resources and occasional classes/seminars for parents of
  • Model a Christ-filled life, maintaining appropriate boundaries with work and others, caring for self, and participating in church life


Love for youth and strong passion to see them grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ 

  • Proven, effective experience with youth for 5 years in a ministry context
  • Strong leadership skills, competent in relevant technology, effective communicator, team player, driven to enlist volunteer partners in the ministry
  • Strong visioning skills as well as the initiative to carry out the vision in order to build a ministry
  • Familiar with working in a youth ministry with 10+ high schools and middle schools
  • Familiar with United Methodist Safe Sanctuaries® Policies and Guidelines
  • Bachelor degree in youth ministry or related field is preferred
  • Demonstrate passion about the Christian faith, actively seek to grow in personal relationship with God, and be committed to the mission and purpose of Luke’s
  • United Methodist background is preferred but not required
