And so it begins. You walk forward. Ashes are swiped on your forehead in the sign of a cross. Ancient words are uttered once again, “From dust you have come and to dust you shall return. Repent and believe in the Gospel.” And a season of 40 days of preparation begins. This ancient practice may seem irrelevant in the 21st century. But that’s just the point. It’s not your normal life. It’s turning from yourself and turning towards God. It’s getting serious. It’s going deeper than you’ve ever gone before. It’s boldly turning your heart, mind and life to God. And it’s intentionally spending a significant period of reflection, discipline and openness to God’s transforming power. No, most people won’t get this. But, then, you’re not most people.
